After months of experimenting, Grandma's Weapons Grade Ginger Beer, an alcoholic version of the soft drink, was launched on an unsuspecting public in April 2008.
Grandma's Weaons Grade Ginger Beer is made at Wheal Maiden Brewery, in Crofthandy, Cornwall, by enthusiastic ginger beer brewer Colin Tranah.
Nearby Carharrack has been home to a number of ginger beer factories over the years, and between 1840 and 1970 no fewer than seven are known to have been brewing there, along with several mineral water works.
The recipe for Grandma's ginger beer was passed down to Colin by - you guessed it - his Grandma.
The first known written record of Grandma's original recipe dates back to 1928. Although Grandma came from Portsmouth, she lived in the same street as Colin's other grandparents, who had moved there from Redruth.
So it's quite likely that Grandma's recipe is one that was originally developed in the Redruth area and passed around the family, to return to Cornwall 80 years later.
